Guidelines for Fixed Orthodontic Appliance

Now that you have your appliances, the most important thing you can do to take care of them is to Brush And Floss Your Teeth!

You should take extra care in the area between the Space Maintainer band and gums. Food that collects around your bands and wires can cause stains and cavities, as well as unpleasant odors. Make sure to keep your teeth clean. Brush after each meal. Take your time and do it right. You can use an electric toothbrush or a “Water Pik” to help you with your brushing. Your orthodontic appliances will affect the foods you can eat.

Foods to Avoid

1. Hard, crunchy foods

  • Ice: You can have it in your drinks, but don’t chew and crunch on it.
  • Hard edges of pizza
  • Crispy French fries
  • Chips: Try to eat Cheese Puffs or Doritos Thins because they aren’t as crunchy as other chips.
  • Pecans, peanuts, popcorn: They can get caught in your Space Maintainer Appliance and cause
    gum infection.
  • Hard candies such as Life Savers.

2. Sticky foods
Avoid sticky candies such as caramels, taffy and bubble gum.

Fruits and vegetables such as apples and carrots should be cut up into small pieces. Do not suck on lemons or limes since this is a very bad for the enamel on your teeth. Keep objects out of your mouth such as pencils, fingernails, etc. These could cause your appliance to come loose. Treat your new space maintainer with care!
